The Toxic-Independence Tax

October 06, 2026•10 min read

What "I'll Just Figure It Out Myself" Is Really Costing Your Business

Let me tell you about a tax nobody warned you about.

It doesn't show up on your P&L. Your accountant won't flag it. The IRS doesn't collect it. But make no mistake: you are paying it. Every single month. And the bill keeps getting bigger.

I call it the Toxic-Independence Tax.

It's the price you pay for insisting on doing everything yourself. For Googling at midnight instead of picking up the phone. For white-knuckling your way through problems someone else could solve in an afternoon. For wearing "I built this with my own two hands" like a badge of honor while your business quietly bleeds money you'll never see again.

And here's the kicker: most entrepreneurs don't even know they're paying it.

The Myth of the Lone Hero

Somewhere along the way, we bought into a story. The story goes like this: Real entrepreneurs figure it out. Asking for help means you're not cut out for this. If you were smart enough, strong enough, good enough, you wouldn't need anybody.

It's a lie. A big, fat, expensive lie.

I've been coaching since 1992. Over three decades, I have watched brilliant, gifted, wildly capable business owners grind themselves into dust because they were convinced that needing help meant they were failing. They weren't failing. They were paying the tax.

Here's what I know to be true: I believe every single person is a hero, capable of wonder and magic and extraordinary self-expression. But go read any hero story ever told. Not one of those heroes did it alone. Luke had Obi-Wan. Frodo had Gandalf and Sam. Dorothy had a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, a Lion, and a Good Witch. Even King Arthur had Merlin.

The hero who refuses the guide doesn't become a legend. They become a cautionary tale.

So where did we get the idea that the entrepreneur's journey should be any different?

Where This Story Really Comes From

Let's go deeper, because "just ask for help" is useless advice if you don't understand why you don't.

For most of us, the refusal to ask for help isn't a business decision. It's an old, unconscious story, usually one we picked up in childhood.

Maybe you grew up in a house where needing something made you a burden. Maybe you learned early that the only person you could count on was yourself. Maybe asking for help got you criticized, ignored, or made to feel small. Maybe you were the "capable one," the kid who handled it, the one everybody else leaned on.

Those stories kept you safe once. They may even be the reason you had the grit to start a business in the first place.

But now they're running your company. And they're running it straight into a wall.

When you hear yourself say "I don't want to bother anyone," "I should know this already," "It's faster if I just do it myself," or "I can't afford help right now," that isn't strategy talking. That's an old story wearing a business suit.

Here's one of my favorite questions to ask the entrepreneurs I work with: Where are you being silent when you should be speaking?

Sit with that for a second. Where in your business are you swallowing the question, the request, the "I'm stuck," because saying it out loud feels too vulnerable? That silence has a price tag.

How the Toxic-Independence Tax Stacks Up

Now let's talk money, because that's where this gets real.

The Toxic-Independence Tax isn't one big bill. It's a stack of smaller charges that pile up month after month. Let's itemize a few.

Line Item #1: The Trial-and-Error Tax

When you refuse to learn from someone who has already walked the path, you pay full price for every mistake. You launch the offer nobody buys. You build the funnel that doesn't convert. You hire the wrong person, then spend three months cleaning up the mess.

Every one of those mistakes costs time, money, and energy. And a lot of them were avoidable. Someone had already made that mistake and could have told you how to skip it.

Line Item #2: The Undercharging Tax

This one is sneaky. Entrepreneurs who go it alone almost always undercharge. Why? Because nobody is standing next to them saying, "You are worth more than this. Raise your prices." Without an outside perspective, you price from fear and from your own self-worth story instead of from the value you actually deliver.

Do the math with me. Let's say you're charging $2,000 for something the market would happily pay $3,000 for, and you sell four a month. That's $4,000 a month you're leaving on the table. That's $48,000 a year. Over three years? Almost $150,000 in revenue that simply never showed up, because nobody helped you see what was possible.

That's not a rounding error. That's a new car. A down payment. A year of breathing room.

Line Item #3: The Bottleneck Tax

When you do everything yourself, you become the ceiling on your business. Growth can only move as fast as your own two hands and your own 24 hours. Every task you cling to is a task stealing time from the work only you can do: selling, creating, leading, visioning.

If your time is worth $200 an hour in revenue-generating work and you're spending ten hours a week on things someone else could handle, that's $2,000 a week. Roughly $8,000 a month. Close to $100,000 a year spent on a very expensive, very tired version of you doing $25-an-hour work.

Line Item #4: The Opportunity Tax

This is the one that hurts the most, because you never see it at all.

It's the partnership you didn't pursue because you didn't know how to pitch it. The speaking gig you didn't apply for because you didn't feel ready. The program you never launched because you couldn't see the path from idea to income.

You can't put a precise number on the opportunities you never took. But I promise you, for most entrepreneurs, this is the biggest line item on the bill.

Line Item #5: The Burnout Tax

And finally, there's the cost to you. The sleepless nights. The missed family dinners. The creeping resentment toward the very business you started to create freedom. Burnout doesn't just cost you joy. It costs you clarity, creativity, and decision-making power, which means it costs you money too.

Add all of this up and you start to see the real picture. The Toxic-Independence Tax isn't a few hundred bucks here and there. For many business owners, it's tens of thousands of dollars a year. For some, it's six figures.

And it compounds. Every month you pay it, you fall further behind where you could have been.

"But I Can't Afford Help Right Now"

I hear you. And I'm going to lovingly call it what it is: another line in the old story.

Here's the reality. You are already paying. You're just paying the Toxic-Independence Tax instead of investing in something that actually moves you forward. The question was never "Can I afford help?" The question is "How much longer can I afford not to get it?"

Let me ask you my other favorite question: Where are your words out of alignment with what's actually true?

You say you can't afford help. But is that true? Or is it truer to say you're scared to invest in yourself because some part of you isn't sure you're worth it?

You say you're "almost there." But have you been "almost there" for two years?

You say you'll get help "once things settle down." When, exactly, has running a business ever settled down?

When your words line up with what's actually true, the path forward gets very, very clear.

What Changes When You Stop Paying the Tax

Now for the good part. Because this is where the magic lives.

When business owners finally stop going it alone and bring in a coach, a guide, a Merlin to their Arthur, growth doesn't just speed up. It changes shape. It becomes bigger than anything they could have imagined on their own.

Here's why.

You Get to See Your Blind Spots

You cannot see the back of your own head. Neither can I. Neither can anyone. A great coach sees what you can't: the story you keep repeating, the pattern you keep falling into, the gift you keep hiding. That outside perspective alone can unlock growth you've been chasing for years.

You Skip Years of Trial and Error

A coach who has walked this road hundreds of times already knows where the potholes are. Instead of spending eighteen months figuring out the right offer, you can get clarity in weeks. Instead of guessing, you get a plan. Time is the one resource you can never earn back, and coaching gives you more of it.

You Stop Playing Small

Here's the thing about dreaming big: it's almost impossible to do alone. Your old stories will always try to shrink your vision down to something "safe" and "realistic." A coach holds the bigger vision for you when you can't hold it yourself. They see where you want to go and won't let you settle for less. That's when the pricing goes up, the offers get bolder, and the business starts to look like the one you actually dreamed of.

You Get Accountability That Actually Works

You know what you should be doing. Most entrepreneurs do. The problem isn't knowledge. The problem is follow-through. When someone is in your corner, checking in, asking the hard questions, and refusing to accept your excuses (and yes, I am loud about this), things finally get done.

You Face Your Current Reality Without Flinching

Growth requires honesty. You have to look squarely at where you are right now, the real numbers, the real habits, the real fears, before you can map the path to where you want to go. That's hard to do alone. It's much easier with someone who cares about you enough to tell you the truth.

You Rewrite the Story Underneath It All

This is the part most people miss. The strategies matter. But the real breakthrough comes when you rewrite the unconscious story that's been limiting you all along. When "I have to do it all myself" becomes "I deserve support and I'm worth the investment," everything shifts. Your pricing. Your leadership. Your confidence. Your results.

That's when growth stops being a slow grind and starts being exponential.

The Math on the Other Side

Remember those numbers from earlier? Let's flip them.

Imagine a coach helps you confidently raise your prices so you capture that extra $4,000 a month. Imagine you reclaim ten hours a week and pour them into revenue-generating work. Imagine you finally pursue that partnership, launch that program, or land that stage.

Suddenly you're not just stopping the bleeding. You're building something. The same dollars that were stacking up against you month after month start stacking up for you.

That's the real difference. The Toxic-Independence Tax compounds against you. Investing in support compounds in your favor.

You Were Never Meant to Do This Alone

I want you to hear this clearly: asking for help is not a weakness. It's not a sign that you're not cut out for this. It's a sign that you're finally ready to play the game at a higher level.

The most successful entrepreneurs I've ever worked with aren't the ones who did everything themselves. They're the ones who got brave enough to say, "I need help, and I deserve it."

You are a hero. You're capable of magic. You have a vision for your life and your business that is bigger and brighter than anything you've built so far. But heroes don't go it alone. They find their guide, they gather their allies, and then they go do extraordinary things.

It's time to stop paying the Toxic-Independence Tax.
