You've made the vision board. You've written the affirmations. You've visualized the promotion, the book deal, the bank account with all those beautiful zeros. Maybe you've even said it out loud in the mirror while feeling slightly ridiculous.
And nothing changed. Or it changed for about a week, and then you were right back where you started, wondering what the heck is wrong with you.
Nothing is wrong with you. But something is wrong with the story you've been sold.
Let me say it plainly: the Law of Attraction, the way it's usually taught, is incomplete. "Think it, want it, and it will come" skips the single most important part of the equation. It's not that the universe isn't listening. It's that the universe is listening to something other than what you think you're saying.
After more than 30 years of coaching entrepreneurs and business owners, here's what I know to be true: the universe doesn't reflect back what you want. It reflects back what you ARE.
I call it the Law of Resonance. And once you understand it, you will never look at your results the same way again.
Think about a tuning fork. Strike one, and another tuning fork of the same pitch across the room will start to hum on its own. The other forks in the room, the ones tuned differently, stay silent. That's resonance. Like responds to like.
You are not a wish list that the universe processes. You are a living, breathing frequency, and you attract and respond to whatever matches it.
Here's where it gets uncomfortable. Your frequency isn't made up of what you want. It's made up of everything you think, believe, feel, and expect, including the stuff you're not even aware of.
Consciously, you want that promotion. You want to publish the book. You want to double your income, raise your prices, get on stage, finally put yourself out there. Your conscious mind is shouting these desires from the rooftop.
But underneath? Your subconscious is running a completely different program. It's whispering things like: "Who do you think you are?" and "People who stand out get criticized," and "Money changes people," and "Don't get too big, you'll leave everybody behind."
So what does the universe hear? It hears the whole signal. The loud conscious wanting AND the quiet subconscious resistance. And what shows up in your life matches the whole signal, not just the part you like.
Let me give you a picture of this, because it will stick.
Imagine you're in a rowboat. It's a beautiful day. You can see the horizon clearly, and everything you want is sitting right there on it. The promotion. The book on the shelf. The business that runs without you chained to it. The money, the freedom, the impact. You see it all, and you're fired up.
So you start rowing. You put your back into it. You take the courses, you make the plans, you set the goals, you work harder than most people you know.
And yet the shoreline barely moves. Some days you feel like you're actually drifting backward.
You think the problem is your rowing. You think you need to row harder, row smarter, buy a better oar. So you push even more, and you get more exhausted, and you start to wonder if the horizon is even real.
Here's what you can't see from the surface: underneath your boat, there's a current, and it's flowing in the opposite direction.
That current is every internal thought, belief, and fear that disagrees with where you say you want to go. And no matter how hard you row, a current that strong will win. Every single time. Progress isn't impossible because you're lazy, or unlucky, or not "manifesting" correctly. It's impossible because you're rowing against something you can't see.
And here's the part that makes people sit up straight when I say it out loud: those thoughts are from the past, and you probably don't even KNOW they're at work.
This is the heart of The Freedom Code™, the work I've built my coaching around. People are limited by unconscious stories, and those stories were written in childhood.
Think about it. When you were little, you were a sponge. You watched how the adults around you handled money, success, conflict, attention, and failure. You made meaning out of everything. You decided what was safe and what was dangerous. You decided what you had to do to be loved and what would get you rejected.
A kid who got teased for showing off decides that being visible is dangerous. A kid who watched their parents fight about money decides that money equals stress. A kid who was praised only for being "good" decides that being yourself is risky. A kid who was told "don't get a big head" decides that standing out will cost them belonging.
Those decisions were smart. They were survival strategies, and they worked for a seven-year-old. But then you grew up, started a business, and kept running the same operating system. The story is still playing in the background, and it has a vote in every decision you make.
You think you're a grown-up making rational business choices. And sometimes a very small child is quietly steering the boat.
The current doesn't announce itself. It sounds like common sense. It sounds like being realistic, being responsible, being humble. It sounds like this:
You want to raise your prices, but you "just want to be fair" and wait another six months.
You want more visibility, but you keep telling yourself you'll post once the website is perfect.
You want to write the book, but you "don't have time," while you somehow find time for everything else.
You want more money, but you secretly think rich people are greedy, and you don't want to be one of those people.
You want the promotion, but you can't stand the idea of being the one everyone's watching.
Notice that none of those thoughts feel like self-sabotage. They feel like reasons. That's what makes the current so powerful. It has an excuse for everything.
So here are two questions I want you to sit with. They're the ones I use to catch the current in the act:
Where are your words out of alignment with what's actually true?
Where are you being silent when you should be speaking?
The first one exposes the gap between what you SAY you want and what you actually believe. The second one exposes where fear has your tongue. Between those two answers, you'll find the current. I promise you, it's in there.
Now let me tell you what the real work is.
It's not rowing harder. It's not forcing positive thoughts on top of negative ones, which just makes the current angrier. The real work is congruence: the match between what you consciously want and your internal conversation, the current underneath the boat.
When those two line up, everything changes. The current that was fighting you becomes the current that carries you. Suddenly the rowing that felt impossible feels almost easy. Opportunities show up that were always there but invisible to you. People respond to you differently, because you're sending a clean, unified signal instead of a mixed one.
I call that alignment integrity. Not integrity in the moral-lecture sense, but in the original sense of the word: being integrated. Whole. Undivided. When your wants, your beliefs, your words, and your actions all point the same direction, you become a force.
And that's the real key to manifesting. Not "ask the universe nicely." Be a match for what you're asking for.
I'm not a fan of fluffy advice. I want you to walk away with something you can do. Here's your assignment.
1. Look at your results like a mirror, not a verdict. Whatever is showing up in your life right now, in your income, your calendar, your relationships, your business, is reflecting your current frequency back to you. That's not an insult. It's information. Ask yourself: "If this result were a mirror, what would it be showing me about what I believe?"
2. Catch the sentence. For the next seven days, pay attention to the exact words you use when you talk about what you want. "I'd love to, but..." "That's not realistic." "People like me don't..." "I'll do it when..." Write them down word for word. You're collecting evidence of the current.
3. Ask where it came from. Take one sentence from your list and trace it back. When did you first believe that? Who said it, or who modeled it? How old were you? You don't have to analyze it to death. You just need to see that it isn't a fact. It's a story, and it was written by someone who didn't have your current information.
4. Ask if it's true now. This is where the scientist in you gets to work. Is that belief actually true today? Is it serving the person you've become, or only the kid who needed it?
5. Take one action that contradicts the story. Not a giant leap. One small, visible move that the old story says you can't or shouldn't make. Post the thing. Send the proposal. Raise the price on one offer. Say the sentence you've been swallowing. Every time you act against the current, you teach your system that it's safe to go in a new direction.
That's it. You're not erasing the past. You're just refusing to let it drive.
Here's what I want you to take from this.
You are not broken. You are not lazy. You are not doing manifesting wrong. You've been pointing a boat at the horizon while a current you've never examined has been pulling you the other way, and no amount of positive thinking can beat a current you refuse to look at.
When you shine light on the stories running underneath, when you finally name the thought that's been steering you, the current starts to lose its power. Things that stay in the dark keep controlling you. Things you can see, you can choose.
So stop asking the universe to give you what you want. Start asking yourself whether you are a match for it. Get your wants and your internal conversation rowing the same direction, and watch how fast the shoreline moves.
I've seen this work for entrepreneurs who thought they'd hit their ceiling. I've seen it work for people who'd been stuck for a decade. And I've watched people go from "that's impossible" to "I can't believe I waited so long," all because they finally looked under the boat.
You have a horizon worth rowing toward. Let's make sure the water is on your side.
