American novelist Normal Mailer once said that every moment of our existence, we are either growing into more or retreating into less. This is a profound truth about life that should shake you to the core. Bottom line: if we are not growing, we are dying. Human beings are not meant to be comfortable (read: stagnant.) We are meant to identify our passions, goals and values and become MORE. Whether that MORE is more like God, more kind and caring or more productive, that is up to you.
“Every moment of one’s existence one is growing into more or retreating into less. One is always living a little more or dying a little bit.” –Norman Mailer
There are many avenues to personal growth: self-improvement gurus, books and courses, spirituality, and even religion. All of these require one to take a deep look at oneself and evaluate where you are in your life and where you want to go. This is called “creating a gap.” It’s a growth gap that requires you to step into the unknown, beyond your comfort zone, and push the boundaries of what you know is possible for yourself. This is how growth occurs.
Too many people live lives inside their comfort zones but then wonder why they aren’t happy. They aren’t happy because REAL LIFE, satisfying life, only occurs outside your comfort zone. And GROWTH is required there.
