Have you ever noticed that you keep dating the SAME kind of people… you keep struggling with the SAME problems… you NEVER have enough money. You never have enough time… you might even notice that you keep trying the same solutions, all the while wondering “why aren’t they working?”
There are reasons why we keep getting the same results over and over again. We don’t change our mind and we don’t change our beliefs. We continue doing the same things, day in and day out, yet we expect to get different results. (The definition of “insanity” by many 12 step programs.)
What you need is brain surgery… well, not really, just a mind shift. I call this a transformation of the mind. Your mind and your mindset (attitude) are at the root of all you attempt and all that you ACTUALLY accomplish. Whether you succeed or fail, your mindset/attitude is the source of the result. (See yesterday’s great post on focusing on gratitude to get you out of your funk.)
A transformation of the mind happens when we change our habits, routines and systems. First, you need to have a vision of what you WANT your life to be like. What is your ideal relationship? Your ideal job? What would it look like if you handled your finances in a way that was inspiring? How would it look if you had more money, more clients or more time? Once you get that vision firmly defined, you plan the action items necessary to make it happen. I call this a Vision Plan. (There are forms under the change your life/free tools tab to help lead you through this. You can also subscribe to my ebook for more explicit directions.)
Your Vision Plan needs to be rooted in action items. These action items are the routines and habits that you need to start “changing your mind.” If you are committed to being a vegetarian, you may create a routine of reading a book about vegetarianism or watching a documentary on the meat industry each week. This routine will LITERALLY keep the conversation of VEGETARIAN alive in your mind ongoingly. The more you focus on DOING the things a vegetarian does, the more you BECOME a vegetarian… until finally being a vegetarian is a natural reflection of who you are, and not just something you do.
This kind of structure is necessary to facilitate lasting change. This is the reason why sober people don’t go to bars, compulsive over-eaters stay out of bakeries, and successful people continuously and HABITUALLY do the things that unsuccessful people won’t.
If you want to change your life, you must start with your mind.
CALL TO ACTION: What routines can you create that will begin to trigger a “change of mind” for yourself?
