I read this great article today that gave me a new idea to help me bust my urges to overeat. I created an “Urge Jar.” Every time you have an urge to eat something (or do YOUR thing), instead of doing that thing, you put a stone in your jar and take a deep breath and then DON’T DO IT.
In the article, it said that the problem with just trying to suppress an urge is that there is literally a chemical wave inside your body behind it. When you succumb to an urge, a shot of dopamine is released from your brain and you get actual, physical relief. This is why it sometimes feels like urges OVERCOME YOU physically… it’s because they actually do.
The idea of the jar is that you do an action that physically makes you feel like the urge has been met, and, thus, then you still get the dopamine rush from your brain, but you have tricked it! You haven’t succumbed to the urge at all, but rather, worked around it.
The most important thing to remember when you are tackling something huge is to NEVER QUIT. Just keep failing and try something new until you find the solution that pushes you through. There really is no such thing as FAILING, you just QUIT before you succeed.
