Some days just aren’t very inspiring, you are just going along and doing what you are “supposed to” and living your life. You are in action, things are moving forward, everything is “fine.” One of my friends calls this “doin’ ‘the do.'”
Fine doesn’t seem good enough for me. I want my days to be amazing, spectacular… INTERESTING. But the truth is, not every day is inspirational. Therefore, you have to find the beauty is the mundane. You have to look for something that will inspire you in the ordinary. I work to be more grateful for the things I have in my life and be present to their beauty. This is what makes any day extraordinary: gratitude and being present.
When you go through your days without gratitude and presence it reminds me of a scene from one of my favorite movies: “Joe vs. the Volcano.” In the opening scene, dozens of men in the same type of black suit are trudging through mud, moving the same way toward the entrance to their jobs. Everything is gray and you feel an overwhelming sense of hopelessness.
I refuse to believe that life has to be this way. In his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, neurologist and philosopher Viktor Frankl said:
“The last of the human freedoms: to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. And there are always choices to make.”
THERE ARE ALWAYS CHOICES TO MAKE. So why not find a way to make every day amazing, even in the smallest way? Think about YOUR life today. What are you the most grateful for? Is there someone in your life who you really appreciate that you could tell today? I find that when I do this, it shifts my ho-hum day to something better.
