…and the REAL truth about each one:
1. I don’t have time to set up a system.
You don’t have the time NOT to. Stop what you’re doing today and make the time. There will NEVER be a point in your life where time just opens up and you’re sitting there thinking, “Oh, now I have time to plan!” Busy people are always busy. If you are committed to living life proactively, you must take charge by stopping the tide of chaos and taking control with planning.
2. My piles ARE a system. I know where everything is…
No you don’t. Piles are inherently reactive, not intentional and proactive. This is a good example of how we lie to ourselves.
3. I don’t like structure. It’s too rigid and inflexible.
Then don’t create that kind… your management system is supposed to be flexible. It gives you a guideline that will allow you to accomplish your dreams. If a task shows up one day that doesn’t fit in with your energy level and commitment, renegotiate it to another day and time.
4. I’m organized; look at all my calendars, devices, etc.
An organized person who maximizes effectiveness has ONE system to manage all of their time and tasks. Anything more than one is counter productive.
5. I’m already too far gone; structure won’t help ME.
If you say so. The key to stopping the “madness” is to stop the madness. Continually complaining about being busy, ineffective, over-stressed and not doing anything about it is a covert commitment to being a victim.
6. I’m already working too hard; I can’t fit anything else in.
See #5… victim.
7. I’m just not an organized person.
Organization and time management are skills that are learned, not inherent. If you are committed to being productive, you will do what it takes to cause it.
Productivity is not just what you produce. It is a mindset that puts you in control of your day. Productive people are in charge and do not get sucked into reacting to every little circumstance that comes their way. You cannot hope to impact the level of results you produce in life if you cannot stop, make a plan, and then manage it proactively.
Call to action: Start telling the truth about the excuses you are making for your ineffectiveness. Today is the day you stop being a victim of your own circumstances.
